For sporty types, the surrounding hills are perfect for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding, with golf facilities also nearby.

You'll find local cheese and cold cuts, and a selection of classic Italian sweet treats, with a scrumptious cake made with Piedmont's world-famous hazelnuts occupying pride of place. There’s also a lovely outdoor terrace, and a wine cellar to tempt your inner sommelier.

How to get there

Turin Airport is around an hour and a half's drive to the north, whilst Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport is just under two hour's drive to the southeast. As public transport links aren't plentiful in the area, we recommend hiring a car from your arrival airport and making your own way to the hotel.

Hotel Relais Montemarino, Via Alba, 66 - Loc. Manera, 12050, Borgomale (CN), Italy

Staying in the Piedmontese village of Borgomale, you’ll be just six miles from Alba – a historic town famous for its gourmet cuisine, white truffles, and chocolate (it’s where Ferrero Rocher comes from). Must-dos include walking around the beautifully-preserved old town to see its “hundred medieval towers,” stopping off for a gelato in one of the pretty squares, and seeing the interesting artworks housed in the Church of San Giovanni on Elvio Pertinax Square.

The surrounding area is dotted with vineyards and wine villages - La Morra and Barolo are the most famous - which are well worth a visit, and the major cities of Cuneo, Turin and Savona, all under an hour and a half's drive away, are perfect for a culture- and flavour-filled day trip.
