Perched towards the ‘toe’ of Italy’s ‘boot’, Tropea stuns with its setting high above the Tyrrhenian Sea, on a towering cliff. Hidden away in Calabria, it has remained a destination only really frequented by Italians until recently – now, discerning travellers come to sample the sparkling seas, delectable seafood, golden sands and famously warm hospitality. Food, as with any Italian destination, is high up on the list of selling points: Tropea is famous for its sweet red onions, so sweet in fact many locals bite into them directly, as you would an apple – you may prefer to try them atop a pizza, firey with nduja or pepperoncini, or even in a scoop of gelato (try Gelateria Tonino, if this sounds appealing – more traditional flavours are available).

Tropea’s a gem to explore on foot, where winding streets are lined with elegant palazzi and scented with the gentle fragrance of lemon blossom. Discover also the other beaches and villages clinging to the ‘Costa degli Dei’ - the coast of the gods; perhaps Rotunda, Convento and Passo Cavalieri? A highlight is the Santuario Santa Maria dell'Isola, a monastery that sits magnificently on a rocky outcrop and offers magical views of the coast.
