Take in the views of Portugal's Douro River from hip bedrooms in Vila Nova de Gaia’s most famous Port wine cellar - includes breakfast and a welcome drink
  • When in Porto, stay at the city's most famous Port house: The Sandeman cellar certainly makes its presence known: towering black letters proclaim the city’s most famous Port house from all angles of the building that overlooks the Douro on one side and the red-tiled roofs of steeply-rising Vila Nova de Gaia on the other. Since its conception in 1790, Sandeman has been known as an innovator – it marketed the very first Port wine brand and now aims to share its fine vintages with the world in the form of the first ever branded hostel and suites.

  • Wine and dine: You don’t have to be a wine lover to stay here either, but it helps: it’s an oenophile’s dream, with a huge selection of Sandeman Port wines to sample (naturally) and a prime setting right atop the famous cellars. Mingle with fellow guests in the sociable lounge before dinner, and enjoy drinks and snacks on the terrace.

  • Home from home: This is a stylish place through and through; with smart, rattan-adorned guest rooms and private en-suite bathrooms for seasoned travellers. The setting offers one of Porto’s finest views: from some of the rooms you can take excellent photos of the wide ribbon of water, the glinting metal arch of the Dom Luís I bridge, and the chaotic jumble of the city’s rosy red roofs.

How to get there

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is around a 25-minute journey from the hostel via car.

Good to know

Please note that although the property features mixed dorm-style rooms typically characteristic of a hostel, you will be staying in an en-suite bedroom.

Largo Miguel Bombarda, 4430-175 Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal

Across the Douro River from Porto in the neighbouring city of Vila Nova de Gaia, the property is located in one of the city’s most famous historic buildings right on the edge of the water. Enjoy the views of Porto’s downtown area, which can be reached in a 20-minute walk over the iconic Dom Luís I bridge. Cross the bridge to head into Porto proper – the downtown area is just 20 minutes’ walk away, where you can navigate the muddled streets on foot and sample (you guessed it) more Port wine in the city’s backstreet bars. This part of Portugal is famous for its many ancient Port wine cellars.
