The island of Zakynthos is a rocky gem cast adrift in the Ionian Sea, surrounded by sparkling waters that lap onto paradisiacal white beaches or up against sheer cliffs. The rocky, hill-strewn interior is carpeted in olive trees and small, tumbledown villages – many now abandoned after the earthquake in 1953. Alykes is on the east coast, its soft sandy beach lapped by crystal clear waters. The village has a variety of tavernas and there’s a marina from which you can take private boat tours. Head out of town, past the vast salt flats, into the forested hills to explore gnarled olive groves and family-run wine estates.
